Courtesy photo Inspired by the racial uprisings of the last year, Suárez Dance Theater is launching a film series shining a light on the often overlooked stories of Santa Monica’s Black, Indigenous, and Latinx community members. The “Mapping our Stories” project is created in collaboration with filmmaker Leonardo Rivas and three groups of BIPOC performers, whose videos each highlight a different culture and area of the City. Chumash and Tongva poet and songwriter Jessa Calderon captures Santa Monica beach and Tongva Park; Black choreographer and performer Bernard Brown explores the Belmar Triangle; and Latinx dance collective Primera Generación highlights the Pico neighborhood. ....
Canyon News SANTA MONICA On Monday, December 14, the Santa Monica City Council announced that Former Mayor Bob Holbrook died on Friday, December 11 after battling a long illness. Holbrook was a native-born Santa Monican who served on the City Council for 24 years from 1990-2014. Mayor Holbrook was involved in building Tongva Park in the Civic Center and a memorial at Woodlawn Cemetery to honor local veterans. Before joining the Santa Monica City Council, Holbrook served on the Board of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District for seven years. “As a lifelong Santa Monica who attended local schools, he remained a passionate advocate for education,” the city of Santa Monica said in a statement. In 2018, City Council contributed funding for a scholarship in honor of Holbrook to support the education of Santa Monicans pursuing careers in public service. ....
Former Mayor Holbrook Dies Bob Holbrook Former Santa Monica Mayor Bob Holbrook died this week. Holbrook was a Santa Monica native. He was known for bring born at the now defunct St. Catherine’s Hospital on 4th Street and educated in Santa Monica schools including Roosevelt, John Muir, John Adams Middle, and Samohi. He attended Santa Monica College. He went on to study pharmacology at USC and joined the Air National Guard. He worked at McCarthy Drug Store and Thrift in the city. He is survived by Jean Anne (who he married in 1967), Bob Jr., Cindy and Craig. Holbrook was a strong advocate for homeless services and working to improve public parks within the city. He is credited as a foundational force in creating Tongva Park and establishing veteran services at Woodlawn Cemetery ....
