What is air pressure?

The weight of the air above us exerts a force on any surface it comes into contact with due to gravity. This force is caused by the atoms and molecules in the atmosphere and is known as air pressure. ....

What is an attosecond? A physical chemist explains the tiny time scale behind Nobel Prize-winning research

Work in attosecond physics has led to a better understanding of how electrons move around. Oselote/iStock via Getty ImagesA group of three researchers earned the 2023 Nobel Prize in physics for work that has revolutionized how scientists study the electron – by illuminating molecules with attosecond-long flashes of light. But how long is an attosecond, and what can these infinitesimally short pulses tell researchers about the nature of matter? I first learned of this area of research as a gradua ....

Nobel Prize in Physics Goes to Scientists Studying Electrons

Tom Little/ReutersThe Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three scientists behind experiments “exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules,” the Nobel committee said Tuesday. Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier studied the movement of electrons during just a tiny fraction of a second, since electrons move too fast to be examined otherwise. “They have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes ....

Agostini, Krausz and L'Huillier win 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Scientists Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L'Huillier won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics for creating incredibly short pulses of light that can capture processes inside atoms and molecules, in work which could advance medical diagnostics and electronics. The prize, which was raised this year to 11 million Swedish crowns (about $1 million), is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. "The ability to generate attosecond pulses of light has opened the door on a tiny, extremely tiny, time scale and it's also opened the door to the world of electrons," said Eva Olsson, member of the Nobel Prize in Physics Selection Committee. ....
