Second earthquake in two days strikes central Croatia, killing seven and damaging buildings

SISAK, Croatia (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck central Croatia on Tuesday, killing seven people, injuring more than 20 and rattling several neighbouring countries, officials and residents said.
Rescuers pulled people from the rubble of collapsed buildings in Petrinja and other towns, and army troops were sent to the area to help.
Tremors were also felt in Croatia’s capital Zagreb and as far away as Austria’s capital Vienna. Slovenia shut its only nuclear power plant as a precaution.
It was the second quake to strike the area in two days.
The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said it hit at 1119 GMT at a depth of 10 km (6 miles), with the epicentre in Petrinja, 50 km south of Zagreb. ....

SISAK, Croatia-An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck central Croatia on Tuesday, killing at least seven people, injuring more than 20 and rattling neighboring countries, officials and residents said.

Croatia earthquake: Seven dead as rescuers search rubble for survivors


A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck central Croatia, with reports of many injuries and at least seven deaths.

A 12-year-old girl was killed in Petrinja, the prime minister said as he visited the town.
Five people died in the nearby town of Glina, his deputy said. A seventh victim was found in the rubble of a church in Zazina, state media reports.
Petrinja s mayor said around half the town had been destroyed and people were being pulled from the rubble.
The earthquake could be felt in the Croatian capital Zagreb, in neighbouring Bosnia and Serbia, and as far away as Italy. ....

Nuclear plant closed in Slovenia after Croatia's largest earthquake in decades


“The city has been demolished, the city is no longer liveable,” he said. “We need help.”
Tomislav Fabijanic, the head of emergency medical services in nearby Sisak, said many people had been injured, Reuters reported.
There are fractures, there are concussions and some had to be operated on, he said.
Tremors could be felt in the Croatian capital, where people rushed out on to the street and debris was strewn across the road, and also in neighbouring Bosnia and Serbia.
Prime Minister Adrej Plenkovic, who arrived at the scene, confirmed that one girl had been killed. The army is here to help. We will have to move some people from Petrinja because it is unsafe to be here, he said. ....
