As millions of people in Texas are dealing with burst pipes after a bout of unnaturally cold weather for the Lone Star State, La Junta residents may have dodged a miniature water crisis of their own.
La Junta street crews responded to a water main pipe break on Saturday that caused water to geyser 35 feet into the air on Colorado Avenue, adjacent to Otero Junior College.
The initial ping-pong-ball-sized hole in the water main beneath south Colorado Avenue was quickly followed by multiple other breaks as crews attempted to repair them, city engineer Tom Seaba said.
In addition to the numerous breaks, a water valve was stuck and would not close, which is why crews raced to repair the live pipe as water continued to flow through it, out of it and down Colorado Avenue.
