　　在长达半个多世纪的漫长岁月中，尽管也曾一度出任校长，从事行政管理工作，但教书育人、笔耕不辍，以学术为志业，始终是先生毕生的追求，是他矢志不渝的人生目标。本文即主要围绕先师的学术道路及其治史风格，略作概述与追忆，以表达无限的哀思与敬意。 　　章开沅先生在其九十华诞之际曾回忆说：“我从事历史教学与研究整整65年，但并非出于自己的选择，终生与史学结缘纯属偶然。” 　　先生祖籍浙江吴兴（今湖州），生于安徽芜湖。童年时期，在动荡的时局中，曾随父母迁居多地。少年时期，先生酷爱文学，勤于写作，一度想成为文学家。抗战时期，逃难四川，就读于江津国立九中，后来学过会计，当过船工，做过抄写员，还投笔从戎，加入了青年远征军，历经生活磨难，深知民生艰辛。1946年9月进入南京金陵大学历史系
