Floyd’s death sent a nation of people in quarantine out into the streets in mass protests. Major corporations issued statements in support of Black Lives Matter. Politicians promised a new direction. Normal, IL, USA / www.cities929.com Apr 9, 2021 2:15 PM I was one of the likely three people who actually watched the show hearings in the Illinois House during lame-duck session regarding eliminating bail and most forms of pretrial detention. Though the hearings featured witness testimony, remarkably, the super-majority Democrats had a negligible interest in hearing from the criminal defendants in whose name these seismic shifts in criminal justice policy were being sought. House proponents neglected to call anyone whose life was “destabilized” by pretrial detention after being arrested for dealing methamphetamine or committing arson such that they were deprived gainful employment or the opportunity to care for their families. No one was called who could articulate the exact injustice they suffered after being arrested and released on bail, as opposed to merely ticketed, for committing misdemeanor offenses such as transmitting obscene images, theft, or assault.

Community Groups Distribute 15,000 Pounds of Free Food in Compton By Cora Jackson-Fossett, Staff Writer Published April 8, 2021 (Courtesy photo) Free groceries, facemasks and hot meals were distributed to more than 500 individuals and families during a food drive held on April 3, in Compton. AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Social Change, Compton Chamber of Commerce and several grassroots organizations sponsored the three-hour event, which took place in the parking lot of Calvary Baptist Church. Attendees either drove up or walked up to receive an array of free food, including fresh produce as well as confidential HIV tests and an opportunity to win a $50 Ralph’s gift card.
