Police are urgently appealing for help to identify the owner of a kayak found floating in the water north of Auckland 29 January 2021
The green and black camouflage-coloured kayak was spotted between Whangaparaoa Peninsula and Tiritiri Matangi Island shortly before 9am.
Photos published by Police on Facebook show a paddle and a yellow-and-black life jacket still on board.
Police say anyone with information should call 105 .
Pet owners are increasingly bringing pet cats and dogs to pest-free islands, where they can wreak destruction on fragile native animals, the Department of Conservation says.
Urupukapuka Island, near Russell, has been pest-free for more than 10 years, and is home to flourishing native bird populations.

In the Bay of Islands, ranger Helen Ough Dealy said dogs were often brought onto the protected islands, particularly during summer. But owners had also been caught walking their cats on leashes, and with cats on a paddle board.
Rangers were also finding more and more boats moored at pest free islands with cats living on board, despite the risk of them reaching the shore.

New Zealand has a serious problem with alcohol.
The reporting in this article about this riot in Whangamata is part of the issue. At no stage does it address the issue of this class A drug s vice like grasp over the levers of control in this country. The liquor industry, politicians and a liberal culture is responsible for this.
While I agree with the words Sandra Goudie about rich self-indulgent teenagers, it would be interesting to see what her voting record is on alcohol.

I have been comparing the leadership of Trump (US) and Johnson (UK). Johnson got a Brexit deal over the line and he has not been weak in enforcing lockdowns. Trump is anti lockdown and has not signed a major new trade deal.
For 2022 I want the world to have control over Covid – 19 and for there to be success with vaccines to combat the virus and/or a treatment for those who do not vaccinate.

The statement Boris Johnson, … has not been weak in enforcing lockdowns. is oversell. His numerous pronouncements have been so confusing, they have been largely ignored or disregarded. They have been so bad that at times it has seemed he didn t have a clue as to what they were himself. At the outset he even let his Svengali advisor off the hook, even though Cummings sat on the committee that made up the Rules Mk I.

I have been fortunate to visit New Zealand 5 times. The first in the early 1990’s, to attend a scientific conference, and it was in August (mid-winter in the Antipodes). I remember marveling at the cold drippy weather, the American TV shows that seemed popular there (e.g., WKRP in Cincinnati, why?), and the fact that sporting events being broadcast included lots and lots of sheep dog trials. The people were incredibly friendly, the scientific conference was productive, and I wanted to go back sometime.
