According to legend, a 14th Century Tibetan prince named Khye Bumsa came to Sikkim after a divine revelation promised him riches. In 1642 Bumsa’s descendant, Phuntsog Namgyal, was consecrated priest-king of the new Kingdom of Sikkim.
