Most elected officials agree that Connecticut needs more affordable housing. The Housing Committee held a hearing Thursday that offered a preview of how lawmakers intend to address the issue this session.
The bills introduced take a statewide approach to increase affordable housing.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker voiced his support for HB 6430, a bill that could put more affordable housing in high-opportunity areas those with stronger economic and educational outcomes.
Elicker said the measure would keep towns involved in the decision-making process. “It will not take away local control or give cities power over surrounding suburbs,” he said. ....

Woodbridge Becomes A Test Case For Advocates Of Affordable Housing

Developer AA Denorfia Building & Development wants to bring more affordable housing to Woodbridge. Its application has the backing of Open Communities Alliance, a nonprofit that works on housing equity, and the Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization at Yale Law School. But the proposal also has drawn opposition, dominating the town’s planning and zoning meetings for the last two months.
The problem: The town’s zoning regulations need to be changed to allow for the four-unit multifamily house. The solution according to Open Communities Alliance is changing those regulations, which would then create more opportunities for affordable housing in Woodbridge. For OCA, this represents a test case in the town. ....

TRUMBULL After two decades of continual involvement in Trumbull politics, Mary Beth Thornton, a nine-term member of the town council including the last four as chairman, recently resigned after moving out of her district.
Her time in government began with a simple request, which she flatly rejected.
“Back in 2003, (former First Selectman) Ray Baldwin was filling out his ticket, and they were looking for people to fill some seats in District 2,” Thornton said. “At the time I was pretty well-known in the district, because I was active in the Nichols Improvement Association. So Ray called me and asked if I would be interested in running for town council, and I said, ‘No, thanks.’” ....
