More NC Republicans switch parties following Capitol riot, impeachment trial

More NC Republicans switch parties following Capitol riot, impeachment trial
Danielle Battaglia and David Raynor, The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.)
Mar. 4 RALEIGH More than 15,000 registered Republicans switched parties since the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, with 85% of them becoming politically unaffiliated.
Eighteen percent of those voters left the party on or after Feb. 14, the day after former President Donald Trump s second acquittal in a Senate impeachment trial.
For the last two months, the party has faced one controversy after another beginning with the attack on the Capitol that many blame on Trump.
Since then, the state party censured U.S. Sen. Richard Burr for finding Trump guilty of inciting the riot. Burr was one of 57 senators, including seven Republicans, to cast a guilty vote. ....

Gov. Cooper vetoes SB 37, the school reopening bill

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) Gov. Roy Cooper said Friday that he has vetoed Senate Bill 37: In-Person Learning Choice for Families. The bill would compel the state s 115 K-12 public school districts to reopen with at least partial in-person instruction, while also allowing parents the option of keeping their children learning remotely.
The plan introduced by Republican state lawmakers could still become law if enough of the handful of Democrats who supported the bill decide to help override the governor s veto.
Students learn best in the classroom, and I have strongly urged all schools to open safely to in-person instruction and the vast majority of local school systems have done just that, Cooper said. However, Senate Bill 37 falls short in two critical areas. First, it allows students in middle and high school to go back into the classroom in violation of NC Department of Health and Human Services and CDC health guidelines. Second, it hinders local and state officials from ....

State agrees to expand early prison releases

WARRENTON — A settlement agreement between North Carolina’s government and civil-rights groups is expected to lead to some sort of early release for 3,500 state-prison inmates in hopes of getting them out of the immediate line of fire of COVID-19.
The deal prospectively resolves a lawsuit against the state the State Conference of the NAACP and other groups had lodged on behalf of prisoners, a case that a judge had already warned both sides the state was likely to lose.
The state has 180 days to complete the process once Wake County Superior Judge Vince Rozier, who’s overseeing the case, acts on a request from the two sides to delay further court action. ....
