The sublime Oakwood Cemetery Chapel, designed by Charles Page in 1914 and rededicated after a major retooling in 2018, has been closed to the public since March 2020.
That has not stopped parks employees  the Austin Parks and Recreation Department oversees the city s oldest cemetery, founded in 1839 and their collaborators from creating digital exhibits that tell essential stories and relate back to the graveyard and its past.
These story maps have dealt with a pioneer Black leader, the Rev. Jacob Fontaine; Austin s Tejano history and Mexican American burials; music and musicians interred at Oakwood; people who fought for Texas independence from Mexico; the Austin suffrage movement; and a broad look at grief, loss and love across cultures. ....

Austin native Alfred Dotson served in World War II and turns 102 soon


One day in 1932, Alfred Dotson Sr., and his twin brother, Wilfred, became instant musical celebrities at Kealing Junior High School. The two native Austinites sang “Painting the Clouds with Sunshine” so charmingly that teachers sent the 13-year-old duo around the building on Pennsylvania Avenue in East Austin to perform for all of the classes.
“I sang it at my 75th wedding anniversary, too, with the men’s chorus at Ebenezer Baptist Church,” Dotson says in a smooth tenor voice. “I was with my wife, Ruth, for 79 years. She was my girl.”
If you request that song today, Dotson, who turns 102 on April 15, will likely oblige. ....

Austin Civil Rights Leader Bertha Sadler Means Dies At 100


Bertha Sadler Means held many roles in her life – a community leader, political activist, businesswoman and educator.
Austin civil rights icon Bertha Sadler Means died Tuesday, just two months shy of her 101st birthday. Means held many roles in her life  a community leader, political activist, businesswoman and educator.
She enjoyed a long career in education. Before retiring, Means worked at the Austin Independent School District where she taught elementary and secondary education. She was a professor at Prairie View A&M College and UT Austin, and hosted workshops on professional development at Huston-Tillotson University.
Austin ISD honored her legacy by naming the Bertha Sadler Means Young Women s Leadership Academy after her. The Bertha Sadler Means African American Resource Center at Huston-Tillotson University was also named in honor of her philanthropic support over the years. ....

Black History Month in Brown County: Rufus F. Hardin

February is Black History Month.  Brownwoodnews.com will run a series of articles this month about some of the early Black leaders in Brown County.  This is the second in the series.
Most folks in Brown County are familiar with the Hardin School building on Hall Street, adjacent to Cecil Holman Park and the Bennie Houston Community Center, but are not so familiar with the man for whom the school was named.
Rufus Forley Hardin was born in slavery in August, 1859, in Kaufman County, southeast of Dallas.  His formal education began at the age of 13 in Kaufman county, but at the age of 17 he moved north to Kansas and worked cattle.  He attended school during his eight months in Kansas, then moved back to Texas and continued his education in Van Zandt county, also southeast of Dallas. ....
