Tikinagan Child and Family Services is an indigenous child well-being agency serving 30 First Nation communities in northwestern Ontario, stretching from Ogoki in the east to the Manitoba border in the west, and from Savant Lake in the south to Fort Severn in the north.
Mandated by the Chiefs and operating under the Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin service model, meaning “Everyone working together to raise our children” in the Ojibway/Oji-Cree language, Tikinagan believes the answers to family well-being lie within the community.
Associate Executive Director Rachel Tinney explains, “It s a much more culturally sensitive way to work with children and families. We re out there to help and support children, and prevent them from coming into care as often as possible.” ....

It is with great sadness that the family of Penny Skunk announce her passing on Tuesday the 23rd of February 2021 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She leaves behind her husband Simon and a large and loving family.
Penny was born and raised in Mishkeegogamang First Nation. A woman of faith, devoted to her family, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She enjoyed crafting and created incredible moccasins, mitts and beadwork. Many will remember her dedicated work with Tikinagan Child and Family Services. Everyone who knew her was drawn to her quiet strength and quirky sense of humor. ....

THUNDER BAY – It’s more important than ever to maintain connection to traditional languages for foster children and families during the disruption of COVID-19, according to Tikinagan Child and Family Services.
“Some of our foster parents prefer to speak in their Native language, and with community visits limited, we wanted to be able to meet their needs during a challenging time,” says Thelma Morris, the agency s executive director. ....

A Teenager In Our Region Is Taking A Stand Against Bullying

A teenage from North Caribou Lake, which is north of Sioux Lookout, is standing up to bullying.
Her name is Memekwe Apetawakeesic-Morisseau, she’s a 14 year old aspiring teen artist and is she is the winner of a poster contest, that was created for Tikinagan Child and Family Service’s “Red Alert! Bullying Hurts!” campaign.
Her design was selected as the winner from over 130 entries.
Memekwe used a bullying story from her own live as inspiration for her poster.
