Er t the latest on hurricane dorian. pummelling the islands. catastrophic winds. the strongest storm in modern records to hit the northwestern bahamas. it s time for the strongest ever in history in the atlantic to make land fall. sustained winds in excess of 170 miles per hour with gusts over 200 miles an hour. the national hurricane center dedescribes the conditions as catastrophic. the strength been described could wipe homes off their foundations in seconds. storm surge raising sea levlts by as much as 18 to 23 feet above normal tide levels and keep in mind that three feet can easily knock you off your feet and kaury cars away. and an additional rainfall amount causing flooding and destroying docks also a concern here. one witness on the ground called this total and mass devastation. ....

Upstream on the northeastern cape fear river is a place where they expect the tide levels to rise sometimes maybe between 15 and 20 feet above the record stages. so this is really a dangerous situation here. this is a tidal river. that makes it predictable under normal circumstances. but right now, with so much water coming in and the storm surge pushing the tides even higher as i ve just been talking about, that water is not going to have anyplace to go. the river, don, has different contours in different places. here it s deeper and wider. but in the northeastern section of the cape fear river, it s more shallow. it s got tributaries flowing all over the place, a lot of people living near those tributaries. some of those people in those rural areas like what we saw in new bern, north carolina, today with its flooding, some of those people are going to be in for some real trouble, especially if they did not evacuate those areas. so that s a real nail-biter tonight, don. another nail-b ....
