(soft music) first night here. but amy seems cool. what do you think? hmmm. good evening, the former president s defense attorney met privately today after house managers wrapped up their case. senator cruz said they were working on a strategy and according to one of the attorneys, the republican senators quote making sure we are familiar with procedures. the private meetings put the lie of any notion this is a totally impartial affair. it is not. it is a political exercise, i think the end results of this impeachment trial is crystal clear to everybody that donald trump will be acquitted. more now on how democrats wrapped up their case today from cnn s jeff zeleny. senators, we need to exercise our common sense of what happens. reporter: the house managers urging senators to hold trump responsible, he knew they were coming. he brought them here. he welcomed them with open arms. or reporter: on the final day of arguments, the prosecutors zeroed in on trump s actions
observed at least 15 empty seats on the republican side of the chamber. three republican senators, ted cruz, lindsey graham and mike lee, who signed oaths to be impartial jurors, met with the former president s defense team to talk about strategy. cnn s lauren fox live on capitol hill. in just a few hours we ll hear from that defense team. what do we expect? we expect it to be pretty short. that is part of the reason because they are trying to deal with the fact that they don t think they can lose this case. and when you have the votes, you vote. that s the slogan on capitol hill. and that s the fact going into today. look, what the defense team has to do today is essentially not lose any more republicans. and there s little evidence that they could. despite the fact that a lot of republicans have argued that they were compelled by the case the democrats made, they thought the house managers did a good job. they connected dots. they still feel like they are not going to vot

newsroom. we begin this hour with more breaking news. yet another shoot-down of a high-altitude object, this one confirmed a short time ago in the skies over the yukon in northern canada. president biden and canadian prime minister justin trudeau gave norad the order to shoot down the object early in the day. a u.s. fighter jet successfully brought it down. it s not clear if this latest shoot-down is related to yesterday s downing of another object off the northeastern coast of alaska. that was near the canadian border, nor is it clear if it s related to the chinese spy balloon that was shot down last saturday. arlette saenz is at the white house. the president was just making some remarks to some governors there in the white house a few moments ago. doesn t sound like he took any questions or made any remarks there. but obviously this is top of mind for the administration after what you and i were reporting on last saturday which was the shoot-down of that chinese spy ballo
