i was told by another member of the ventura county sheriff s department is relatively small, county north of los angeles, only about 800 sworn deputies in the department. these people all know each other. they knew sergeant other: they knew sergeant helus. he saved people s lives. once he was shot, he was taken out of that bar and grill. he was placed into a patrol car, not even an ambulance, and brought over here to the medical center where he was ultimately pronounced dead. this department is devastated. this community is devastated, and they re all going to gather here when his body is transported from here up north to the ventura county medical examiner s office later this morning. a difficult moment for sure. chris, you re over at the reunification center. what do we know about the families who still don t know where their loved ones are? reporter: there are about 50 to 60 people here inside the thousand oaks teen center. what a long and absolutely unimaginably horrific night
for these families who are inside now the thousand oaks teen center, the wait continues, and a horrific one it is, craig. chris jansing there in thousand oaks. chris, we ll be checking in with you throughout the afternoon. thank you. let s move to jacob soboroff. jacob is outside the medical center where sheriff s deputy ron helus was taken. jacob, what more do we know about those who are still being treated? reporter: we know that there are at least a dozen additional people who are injured, not necessarily craig just at this medical center, but throughout the thousand oaks area of ventura county region. we re just north of los angeles county here in ventura. and ventura county is where sheriff s sergeant ron helus had been on the force for 29 years. he was one year away from retirement. at this point he was a patrol sergeant. he had been on the s.w.a.t. task force that you had heard about earlier in the hour. he had had probably just about
from the thousand oaks teen center, where they have had help and support for family members and friends and holding each other, crying, hugging each other. it has been a long, agonizing wait for many of these families. some of them came in the very early morning hours and it is only, as i said, just very recently that they have start to have had formal identifications of the victims. the most recent that we have gotten confirmed from officials, alana housely, 18 years old. a freshman at pepperdine university. a statement was put out by her family, calling her an incredible young woman. there have been teams of people inside, helping these families get through what has been described as an excruciating wait. and you can understand that. counselors, ministers, just down the block from where i am. there s a synagogue, we ve seen a rabbi going in and out, victims advocate. one of the officials here
