Special counsel and against the witness that the losing witness moved with alacrity, which i had to look up. it means cheerful speed. and with authority and that the judges have responded with accelerated rulings and briefing schedules. we know that judge katsas, trump s former counsel and nominee has recused himself and this sealed legal matter will come to a head in the weeks just after the midterm elections. trump s lawyer jay sekulow denounced the piece. the report in politico is completely false he said. there s been no subpoena issued and there is no litigation. joining us, msnbc legal analyst paul butler. i took this piece as a thought piece. this is help me explain it. this is a former federal prosecutor looking at a bunch of public data points in the filings in the u.s. district court saying somebody somebody had these interactions that he described there and it could have been, one of the possibilities is it was a subpoena for the president. yeah, so thought piece but a ....
Piece, the thought piece, kind of what have we learned? i m reminded the state of the union was tuesday night of this week. what have we learned here come friday night? well, i m just struck by, of course, the situation where we have a president of the united states basically at war with an fbi that s run by his own appointee and a justice department that, again, is run by his own appointee. that s rather extraordinary. even during watergate i don t think we had nixon in public bat battle with the administration as we have seen. and people around the country, they re worried about this. is the fbi going to look bad? are there reasons that it would look bad? but it s a rather extraordinary moment, and it s a risky thing for a president, too. normally presidents don t, you know, tick off the people who have subpoena power and are able to find out secrets. that s kind of a dangerous thing as a politician to do. most presidents haven t. so we re at an extraordinary moment where this pr ....
he said look, i gave some documents to a guy who maybe later turned out to be a spy. they were innocuous documents, something that anybody could have gotten. but isn t that sort of how it begins? the russians are expert at this. right? you start saying give me something that is not sensitive, some lecture that you have given, some newspaper article you have written, and of course some thought piece. and you establish the idea that he established information with me, and perhaps later this can be more later. they re very, very good at it. and jeffrey lord is taking criticism, and cutting payments for the poor. working on my feet all day gave me pain here. ....
Hallmarks of a classical russian espionage operation. they ve identified somebody that looks like he could eventually be in a circle of power, perhaps close to a president at some point. they started this process years ago. taking a look at him, seeing if he is the right kind of person to be essentially a spy for russia. that s not to say that he accepted that proposal or that it even went very far. but i can tell you it looks an awful lot like all the russian operations i ve seen targeting american citizens who might eventually be in positions of power. it s interesting, because carter page one of the things that he says is look, i gave some documents to a guy who later maybe turned out to be a spy. but they were innocuous documents. they were all sort of things anybody could have gotten. isn t that sort of how it begins? oh, yeah. the russians are expert at this. you start saying hey, give me something that is not sensitive. give me some lecture that you have given, some newspape ....
