University Hospitals received a record total of $173.1 million in community contributions in 2020, supporting areas from patient care to research.
The nonprofit health system relies on such support to offset the costs of providing care and for hospital priorities, such as renovations, service expansions and medical discoveries, according to a news release. Due to the pandemic, UH saw a reduction in patient services in 2020, as well as rising costs for medical supplies as demand increased and a quickly changing reimbursement landscape, the release stated.
Last year brought great challenge and uncertainty, as well as profound generosity, said Dr. Cliff A. Megerian, president and incoming CEO of UH, in the release, pointing to community members giving their time and talent to making fabric masks and providing meals for caregivers.
Zenty will retire as president and CEO of UH at the end of this month, capping nearly two decades of leading the system. In that time, UH has built new hospitals and locations, added existing community hospitals into the system and renovated and expanded facilities.
