A 39-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday (June 26, 2021) after he was bitten by a great white shark while surfing off of California’s northern coast.
Authorities say the man was in the water off of Grey Whale Cove State Beach, just south of San Francisco, when his right leg was bitten about 9:15 a.m. Fortunately, the shark took just one bite before letting go and swimming off. The man got a look at the shark, described as a juvenile around 6 to 8 feet long.
Thomas Masotta, who was fishing at the beach during the attack, said he was one of the first to assist the man after hearing him yell for help. The injured man was able to swim back to shore on his own. Masotta said he used his fishing gear to make a tourniquet for the man’s leg.

Beaches in the Pacifica and Montara areas of San Mateo County reopened Monday, two days after a shark attack triggered a full closure.
On Saturday, a 6-foot great white shark bit a man in the leg near Gray Whale Cove State Beach. The victim, Nemanja Spasojevic of San Francisco, was treated and released from the hospital and is now recuperating at home.
Nonprofit group Shark Stewards, which is dedicated to protecting sharks and their habitat, said there are more young white sharks moving north toward the Bay Area.
