These are the issues in a lot of ways that are going to lead to the creation of the United States, most of which will happen in this room, because the colonies as time goes forward or at least many people of the Political Class in these colonies will start to grow dissatisfied with the way the British Government is treating them, is affecting their lives locally. I came to love the smithsonian, so when i had a chance about a dozen years ago to become a regent of the smithsonian, i jumped at the opportunity. I got to meet somebody then who was creating the africanamerican museum, a gifted director who started with nothing to build that museum and now made into one of the most popular museums in the entire country. President obama we are so proud of Ronnie Bunche and the work he has done to make this day possible. Then i was the chair of a search committee, and we looked at many candidates, it was clear that Lonnie Bunche was the best person to be the secretary. The smithsonian, was committed to the smithsonian, so it was an easy choice. We are at the housing museum part of the smithsonian, and Lonnie Bunche is the 14th secretary, the first africanamerican to be selected and the first historian. Is that right . World war i and the shaping of modern black identity. Is a chronicle of men and women who served the country on the battlefield as well as on the home front and their struggles for cell rights. One of the main things we will learn this evening is that while the Civil Rights Movement was dedicated was decades away, world war i established important questions of citizenship that paved the way toward future progress. We are fortunate to be joined tonight by shasha conwell, the museums equity director Deputy Director and editor of we return fighting.
