Carabinieri overseen by a Vicenza prosecutor have begun one probe and seized the helmet-mounted video camera worn by Skydive Thiene instructor Emiliano Basile, who died in the accident, L’Eco Vicentino newspaper reported. An autopsy on the 38-year-old’s remains will be conducted in the next few days, it said. The two parachutes involved in the accident and backpacks containing the two men’s emergency parachutes were also seized.

The accident around noon Sunday at Thiene Airport killed Emiliano Basile, 38, originally of Argentina and a resident of Schio, near Vicenza, Italian media reported. The soldier was being treated at San Bortolo hospital in Vicenza, brigade spokesman Maj. Chris Bradley said. “He has serious injuries, but we are very hopeful,” Bradley said Sunday. “We’re praying for his safety. He’s a tough guy.”

VENEZIA, MAY 10 - A 38-year-old Italian parachuting
instructor died and a 25-year-old American soldier was seriously
hurt after an accident in which their parachutes became twisted
a few metres from the ground at Thiene airport near Vicenza on
Sunday.
The victim was named as Emiliano Basile, originally from
Argentina and resident at Schio near Vicenza.
The injured soldier was named as Aaron Waller, who is posted to
the Ederle barracks at the US air base in Vicenza.
