Greek PM to call for reforms, fiscal prudence after deadly storm

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to announce state reforms and relief measures in a keynote speech on Saturday, days after a devastating rainstorm killed at least 17 people, sources said. In his speech at 1700 GMT Mitsotakis will refer to the challenges the country faces due to climate change, a government source said, and will outline support measures, with funding from the state budget and the European Union, for the people and sectors hit by storm Daniel. Mitsotakis will also announce much-needed reforms across the state to improve ministry coordination, tackle tax evasion, speed up judicial procedures, reduce red tape in the health sector and modernise the education sector. ....

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis again chaired a meeting at the Thessaly Region Coordination Centre for Operations on Thursday, in which he participated via video call, and was briefed on the operations underway for the relief of flood-stricken areas. The prime minister then gave instructions for further action, saying that particular weight must be given to public health issues, pumping floodwater and removal of animal carcasses.

Greek prosecutor orders investigation into deadly floods

A Greek prosecutor has ordered a probe into the causes and handling of floods triggered by a storm that killed at least 15 people, swamped houses and destroyed infrastructure in Greece last week, semi-state Athens News Agency said on Wednesday. Rainstorm Daniel, Greece's most intense since records began in 1930, swept through Thessaly in central Greece for three days at the end of the hottest summer ever recorded in the country. Torrents of water turned the fertile Thessaly plain into an inland sea, with hundreds of residents airlifted or pulled out of flooded homes in lifeboats, crops washed away and tens of thousands of animals drowned. ....
