(AP) Haverhill is planning to honor its veterans as well as city residents currently serving in the military this Memorial Day with banners throughout the downtown area. The Hometown Heroes program is being led by the Haverhill Exchange Club with support from Veterans Services Officer Luis Santiago and the VFW and AmVets organizations. “The banner program serves as a visual reminder of the sacrifice our hometown heroes past and present have and continue to make,” Exchange Club President Thea Tsagaris told The Eagle-Tribune. The banners are made of vinyl and measure 2 feet by 4 feet. Each one includes the image of the person honored, their name and a brief biography. ....
Prosecutors: Murder suspect used metal pipe to beat victim March 12, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Diecryk Garcia, 35, faces a murder charge in the death of John Rosado, 34. Rosado was found Thursday afternoon lying on the sidewalk outside a Haverhill apartment building and bleeding profusely from head wounds, authorities said. The victim was taken to a local hospital, then flown to a Boston hospital where he was pronounced dead. Garcia lived in the building but Rosado did not. Prosecutors did not disclose a possible motive. The judge entered a not guilty plea on Garcia’s behalf and he was held without bail. His court-appointed attorney, Ron Ranta, asked for a delay of the arraignment ....
Suspect in attack on 2 women to undergo psych evaluation March 5, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) A Massachusetts man charged with attacking a woman and her pregnant daughter as they walked their dogs has been ordered by a judge to undergo a mental health evaluation. Jake Kavanaugh, 23, hit the mother with his vehicle twice and attacked her with a box cutter, injuring her eyes and neck, in Haverhill on Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors said in court Thursday. Although Kavanaugh and the women lived in the same neighborhood and were acquainted, the motive remains unclear. “Police are still trying to determine if there is a motive or if this is a random attack,” prosecutor John DePaulo said. ....
