Congressman adam schiff is a democrat of california, he sits on the january 6th committee as chair of the house intelligence committee, and he joins me now. congressman, good to have you. i wonder, as we read through the report and we look at meadows s role, how you understand his role and his culpability in this scheme. well, i think the reason why meadows had some staying power in the trump administration is that he would go along with what the president wanted. but he also had the habit of basically telling people what they wanted to hear, and so you see in those text messages and in other witness testimony that he would tell one person that, well, the president, you know, he s going to recognize he needs to step aside, the election is over, but then he would tell someone else something very different and, of course, he would facilitate schemes of the former president. the most serious of which was the one that you mentioned, in which he was trying to install, ....

, that this was someone who was unable to grapple with the fact that he was a loser, that he had lost this election, and was in his classically unregulated way acting out. i think that s a really important misperception that is corrected by the committee s report. the committee reports at least 200 attempts by trump and allies to pressure states to overturn results. 68 meetings, attempted phone calls or text messages, each aimed at one more state or local officials, 18 instances of prominent remarks, language targeting officials. under 25 social media posts by prince and trump or senior aides targeting one or more such officials, either explicitly or implicitly and mostly from his own account. do you think the correct understanding of the focus of donald trump on this outcome has gotten through to the public, that appears in the ....

And time and time again, meadows was a key player in plotting trump s attempted coup, even though meadows knew trump s big lie of a stolen election was bogus. former trump lawyer, alex cannon, even told the committee that when he informed meadows that he had found no significant instances of fraud that will change the results of the election, meadows acknowledged it. quote, i believe the words meadows used were, so there is no there there? according to the report, again, meadows also worked with pennsylvania republican, scott perry, on a scheme to install a man named jeffrey clark as acting attorney general, in order to weaponize the department of justice on behalf of the coup. remember, they wanted to send out those letters saying, well, the election has been tainted, we don t know who the rightful winner is. quote, perry was working with clark and with president trump at chief of staff mark meadows with this goal to enlist clark to reverse the department of justice s findings, regard ....

The election, and help overturn the election outcome. in fact, after some meetings with perry, meadows can be seen burning documents in a white house fireplace. that s according to testimony from his former aide, cassidy hutchinson. that s to say nothing about the many, many text messages mark meadows turned over to the committee before performing a crucial about-face and deciding he no longer would cooperate. which otherwise made their way to the media. texts would portray him, which protected and something of a gatekeeper, collecting some truly bonkers election conspiracy theories from trump allies on behalf of his boss. so, while it s true that trump is the man most responsible for the attempted coup, and i don t think there s any question, he s even the most responsible for what follows next, as mike next guest had been warning for years, the corrupt people the ex president surrounds himself with our culpable as well. congressman adam schiff is a democrat of california, he sits on ....

One thing that we have not seen, which is extremely unusual, because we haven t seen any prosecutions whatsoever of people who have been enabling. if you look at any prosecution of whether the special counsel investigation with robert mueller or any sort of gang case where you have a group of people, it s very common to charge people going up the ladder and to get them to flip and cooperate. so, i think that is something that people should keep an eye out for, as this goes forward, as a sign of progress, because it is extremely unusual not to have seen any of that so far. that s such an important point to keep our eyes out for, in terms of that georgia fulton county grand jury. that s a special grand jury that s been impanelled and they re expected to produce a final report and then that old with decision will be made by the district attorney there in fulton county, fani willis. andrew weizmann, thanks so much ....
