Thanckes House in Torpoint, complete with a famed stained glass window, was shifted stone by stone six miles to Portwrinkle. It reopened as the Whitsand Bay Hotel in July 1910 and entertained guests for more than 100 years – before its sad closure in 2018. Thanckes House was built in 1871 on the outskirts of the growing town of Torpoint. It was the ancestral home of the Graves family and there had been a house on the site called Pengelly House since around 1300. A previous house called Thanckes House was built in 1714, but was torn down in 1870 to make way for its successor.
