Five people who managed to rescue themselves after their car plummeted down a 25-metre bank in the Coromandel have been described as very lucky .
Emergency services were called to the crash on Kauaeranga Valley Rd at 5:10pm on Sunday, and the Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade says they found a car upside down and submerged in the Kauaeranga River.
On arrival we discovered that five (very lucky) occupants of the vehicle that had careered down a 25-metre bank had extricated themselves from the upside down, submerged car with the assistance of some locals, they said in a Facebook post. ....

Stuff that some locals had seen the car go off the road and had managed to get to the occupants to help them escape.
When firefighters arrived they gained access to the car down a path through the bush and Rendall said they found the people sitting on a ledge in the creek.
He said the path down was quite slippery, but they managed to walk two of the occupants out, while three had injuries that meant they were unable to walk and had to be winched out by the rescue helicopter.

A car load of people had a very lucky escape after their vehicle plunged 25m down a bank into a river near Thames.
Fire and Emergency crews responded to the crash in the Kauaeranga Valley about 5.10pm yesterday.
The vehicle had landed upside down, submerged in water.
