This country. and if the president and the congress can seize the moment and pass comprehensive energy legislation that gets us away from oil dependence and on to a new cleaner energy path that gets new fuels for us and does that while addressing the immediate issues we have in the gulf and solving those issues and helping out those communities there, i think the public will see that as real action that needed to happen, and i think they ll reward the president and congress for it. jane: terry, the key is attracting the support of moderate democrats and republicans. is that possible? [laughter] well, i find this whole analysis to be kind of hilarious and pathetic at the same time. the gulf oil spill is a catastrophe beyond describing, and the democrats and their special interest environmental groups are trying to argue that it s a way for them to do climate change legislation. it s also really pathetic because it says this government ....

Is willing to use this catastrophe to advance their ideological agenda. a climate bill will cause higher taxes for everyone in this country, it will cripple our competitive edge vis-a-vis the rest of the world, and it s at precisely the wrong time as our economy struggles to get out of a recession. i am one republican who hopes that the democrats listen to this nonsense because it does mean that in the election season to come we ll have plenty of differences between the two parties to compare. jane: going forward what about the possibility instead of shooting for the fences and trying to hit a home run that maybe this is scaled back and just go for a double and just work on the energy portion of this and not necessarily the climate portion if we re being realistic? look, to be sure you ve got to address what s going on in the gulf. you ve got to stop the leak, you ve got to clean up the oil you re going to do that with congressional legislation? but listen, terry wants this to ....
Either/or. it s not an either/or moment. this is an all of the above moment, and we need while we re addressing the current issues, we also need to be looking beyond those current events and thinking what are the underlying issues that we need to solve here? we need to be thinking about the long range, we need to have enough foresight to get at the root of the issue, our dependence on oil, especially foreign oil. how do we get off of oil, how do we get off of you know, jane the way we do it, excuse me, terry, the way we do it is move this country on a cleaner path. anything that s pathetic is terry s insistence that we can t do anything more than talk on talk shows. congress can pass legislation that address the jane: terry, i have less than 30 seconds, but i ve got to let you respond. like rahm emanuel, never let a good crisis go to waste, and this is one of those examples of the democrats trying to take this terrible situation and turn ....
