Homeless shelter in Hay River closes, with hope to re-open in June

The homeless shelter in Hay River, which opened for the first time last fall, has closed its doors for now.
Pravina Bartlett, the executive director of the Hay River Committee for Persons with Disabilities, said funding for the 15-bed facility, flowing from the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation (NWTHC), ended on March 31.
We only had a couple of people left, she said. Although the overnight space, dubbed the Move Forward program, had been at full capacity during the winter months, the number of clients had been dwindling, she said. ....

An 'extraordinary step': A closer look at the state of emergency in Yellowknife

On Nov. 6, Paulie Chinna declared a
state of emergency which allowed the government to convert the mine safety building into a day shelter. That state of emergency has been extended multiple times, most recently through Jan. 28.
But the executive director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association says resorting to this option says as much about the state of the territory s laws as it does about the government s efforts to address homelessness.
On the one hand, they are using the emergency power as a workaround force for an urgent necessity, namely, to protect the lives and health of the homeless, said Michael Bryant. On the other hand, a system requiring a workaround is almost by definition, unconstitutional. ....

Fort Good Hope to get greater control over its housing

The K asho Got ine Housing Society in Fort Good Hope will soon be taking over control of repairs and maintenance of housing units in the community. (Submitted by Benita T Seleie-King)
The community of Fort Good Hope, N.W.T., will soon have full control over care and maintenance of its housing.
The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation is handing over authority for repairs and maintenance of private housing units in the community to the K asho Got ine Housing Society, an arm of the K asho Got ine First Nation.
Previously, when Fort Good Hope members living in housing units needed repairs or maintenance on their units, the N.W.T. Housing Corporation would put the work out to tender. Arthur Tobac, a leader with the K asho Got ine Housing Society, described that as part of a problem. ....
