Sarasota Herald-Tribune Editorial Board A lot of the hard work has already been put in to create a mental health taxing district in Sarasota County. A lot of the heavy lifting has already been done to take a huge step toward tackling the mental health challenges facing so many Sarasota County residents. It s been an impressive collective effort – and now it s time for the Sarasota County commissioners to bring this noble undertaking successfully over the line. On Tuesday the commissioners should approve a plan to formally create a taxing district that would provide stable funding to meet the county s growing mental health needs. ....
Separately this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and staff from the Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program announced that it has begun monitoring the dolphins in the area surrounding the gypsum stack spill. The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, a leading dolphin research organization, has maintained the world’s longest longitudinal study of dolphins in the wild. Through research measures such as dolphin surveys and seasonal monitoring of dolphin prey fish, the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program helps scientists learn about dolphin biology, environmental impacts on their health and reproductive success, their social structure and the effects of human activities. ....
Funds will also support the economic recovery of local arts organizations. “Addressing the systemic issues that impact generations of families requires sustained focus and effort,” Teri A Hansen, president and CEO of the Barancik Foundation, said in a news release. “We are optimistic that the investment of these resources will lead to a brighter, more resilient community.” The earlier the investment, the greater the return is the Barancik Foundation’s philosophy on the life-changing importance of investing in early childhood development and education. Grants approved by the foundation board at a recent meeting totaling just over $1 million have been awarded to boost efforts to support infant and early childhood services. ....
Community Submitted A student’s ZIP code should not have more influence on her success than the dreams she holds in her heart. This was the tenet that started Booker Promise Foundation, a scholarship initiative aimed at helping Booker High students enter the workforce without college debt. Providing mentorship, tutoring and career planning, Booker Promise assists select high school freshmen until they walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. Upon graduation, they are eligible for funding covering the cost of tuition and fees for an associate degree or technical certificate at a qualifying public Florida college. The effort recently caught the attention of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, which will be matching all donations made to the organization up to $150,000. Funds will be used to purchase Florida Prepaid Scholarships for participating students. ....
