Duluth native, business owner enters race for Duluth City Council

Another candidate has entered the race for Duluth City Council. Duluth native and business owner Joe Macor announced Monday that he s running for Duluth City Council At-Large.
Macor, who is 38, graduated from Denfeld High School and attended Fond Du Lac Community and Tribal College, where he got a law enforcement degree.
Today, he and his wife own Comfort Living Adult Foster Care in West Duluth. He also coaches football and alpine skiing for his three young sons.
Macor laid out his priorities in a press release Monday.
“Public Safety, streets and infrastructure, housing and taxes, and family supporting jobs are priorities that I feel need our undivided attention as a community” Macor said. “We need to address these issues head on. Businesses, leaders, community members weigh on in on end of Duluth's mask ordinance

For nearly a year, no shirt, no shoes and no mask meant no service in Duluth. Now, businesses and organizations can form mask policies of their own.
This comes after the City of Duluth removed their mask ordinance Friday in accordance with the state of Minnesota who removed their mask mandate.
Vikre Distillery in Canal Park said they would continue to require masks for staff and guests for the time being.
“We have a number of our employees both on our production team and our cocktail room team that are immune compromised and so we are putting their concerns and their voices first,” Emily Vikre, co-founder and CEO said. ....

Ashlie Castaldo will formally announce her campaign for an at large Duluth City Council seat at noon Monday in Enger Park.
Castaldo, age 34, was born and raised in Duluth and now serves as the digital marketing director of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights.
A graduate of Denfeld High School, she went on to earn a bachelor s degree in religion and sociology from Greenville University in southern Illinois and a master s degree in behavioral health from the University of Illinois Springfield. But Castaldo said that after several years away, she longed for home. ....

City of Duluth Will No Longer Enforce Citywide Mask Mandate Beginning Today

As of Friday morning, city officials say they will no longer enforce the citywide mask ordinance.
“Beginning today, the City will no longer enforce the mask ordinance,” Chief Administrative Officer Noah Schuchman said. “It is also important to remember that the CDC’s guidance on easing mask-wearing is for fully vaccinated people and that some business sectors and nonprofits are still required to wear masks within their spaces and may require the public to do the same.”
“The mask ordinance was a plan that was executed to keep our community safe,” City Councilor Terese Tomanek said. “We know that these last fifteen months have been difficult. We are so grateful for the community’s support of this effort. It helped to slow the spread of COVID-19 and saved lives. We are excited to celebrate this big step in starting to get back to normal and more familiar times.” ....

At a press conference in Riverside Park Wednesday afternoon, Hannah Alstead declared her intention to seek one of two at large Duluth City Council seats that will be up for grabs in November.
Alstead graduated from Duluth East High School in 2014, and then went on to earn a bachelor s degree in political science, government, criminology and deviance from the University of Minnesota in 2017.
She has worked as a field representative for U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minnesota, and as an outreach director for Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minnesota. ....
