RECENTLY in Looking Back we featured the opening of the Saxon Inn in Blackburn in 1972 which a lot of readers clearly enjoyed. Among those who got in touch about the article was Henk van Heumen who was the head chef at the hotel from 1973 to 1975. He remembers that the Saxon Inn was “very advanced for its time” but he also reminded us of a major event which effectively ruined Christmas for hundreds of people when the ballroom and banqueting suite was destroyed after fire swept through the building off Yew Tree Drive in November 1974. The hotel was preparing for an extremely busy festive season with hundreds of bookings for its Christmas parties.
