As the year’s first snowfall draped Kashmir, beginning on January 2, life came to a standstill with people and the administration both choosing to stay homes till sunshine brought back the sheen to the streets.
The people reacted to the snowfall as per their own requirements: tourists were happy that they will have fun;
Harisa-makers were excited that they will have better footfalls; workers in PDD, SMC, and the PHE had their share of the crisis in managing the impact of the mess. People, by and large, were tense because snow, especially a heavier fall, seriously compromises the services. That was perhaps why, amidst a congratulatory campaign on social media, people responded in a way as if a calamity had hit Kashmir. ....

Snowfall turns deadly, disastrous for many


3 killed in Kashmir, dozens of houses damaged, many areas still without electricity, road access
Srinagar: Heavy snowfall across Kashmir wreaked havoc on Wednesday, killing three persons and causing severe damage to residential houses and property.
The three deaths reported on Wednesday were of one person each from Srinagar, Kupwara, and Shopian districts. Reports said that an elderly woman, Rahami Begum, 81, died after coming under snow slide at Trehgam village of Kupwara on Wednesday. In Srinagar, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Sub Inspector lost his life after a shed collapsed on him due to the heavy snowfall, at a former legislator’s house in Hazratbal area of the city outskirts. The deceased was identified as HC Murmu. He was taken to Sub-district hospital Hazratbal but later succumbed to his injuries upon reaching SKIMS Institute, Srinagar. ....

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, Jan 6: Kashmir region continued to remain cut off from the rest of the country as surface and air traffic was suspended for the fourth consecutive day due to heavy rain, snowfall and landslides even as two persons including a CRPF Sub Inspector were killed while over 100 structures were damaged as the rain wreak havoc across J&K.
Official sources said that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Sub Inspector identified as H C Murmu of 115 battalion was injured after a shed collapsed due to snowfall at former Hazratbal legislator Syed M Akhoon’s residence. ....
