Thomas sponholtz is the ceo of unison, a very unusual buss that offers to coinvest in houses alongside the homeowner, the same way parents might help their child buy a house. And the other one, which is a problem, its wage theft that happens very often in construction. Damian see, i mean, we have the pictures. You seeyou see the high rises in any downtown, you see the cranes, the construction. And itsyou know, its raza thats doing the work. Josue yep. Yes, in fact, 70 in the bay area, but throughout the state, 70, a little bit over 70 of construction workers are latinos. Damian wow. And so, what happens, al . Sometimes, some of these folks are taken advantage of, and yall are trying to address that . Al well, yeah. You know, i see that a lot happening. I speak to a lot of the workers out there, and they are taken advantage of. Example, their pay, for example. Their breaks, their hours they work is doctored on their paycheck, and there is a wage theft problem throughout san jose. Damian and what recourse do they have . I mean, theyre probably if they dont have any backing, how are they going to speak up and say, hey, im missingyou need to move that decimal p
When i was last here, we had about 100 members, and we are now, 2 years later, at 650 members. Damian wow. Anna yes. Damian and i mean, a lot of Community Events that you organize, youve empowered a lot of women since. Anna yes, and weve supported not only the National Equal Pay campaign, but most recently we supported Latina Equal Pay day, which was on november 2. The reason for that, on average women make about 20 less than men. Latinas, on the other hand, we make 46 less, so were very passionate about closing this wage gap. We worked with over 60 businesses nationwide. Many of them supported us in mountain view, so the chamber of commerce, like to give them a shoutout for supporting us and really bringing awareness to this wage gap among latinas. Damian all right, thats very interesting. And i mean, it takes a lot of work, and yall are doing it. Jenny, how proud are you just of the accomplishments, being one of the cofounders . And i had an opportunity to actually go to some of these vision screenings, some of these dental screenings, and see children get access to healthcare that they werent able to get at home for different reasons. And when i saw the difference that these exams made in terms of the family getting this information, and maybe realizing that their child wasnt able to really learn forbecause they couldnt see the board, or were having a difficult time eating because their teeth hurt, knowing that this organization was at the forefront of making sure that that did not happen out here in the bay area was enough for me to get involved. Erikas in a much better position to talk about the day to day, but knowing that is why i fell in love with the organization and why ultimately i ended up joining the board.
