Jokowi political dynasty gestates

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo could be the first Indonesian leader to have two “sons” as mayors, as the 2020 simultaneous regional elections look likely to pave the way for a nascent political clan. Two pollsters, Charta Politica and VoxPol Center, found on Thursday that Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka and his running mate Teguh Prakosa were leading the race for mayor and deputy mayor of Surakarta, Central Java, with over 86 percent of the sampled votes. The provisional results were similar to those of the General Elections Commission’s (KPU) real-time vote database, Sirekap, which had compiled 54 percent of the votes in the city, suggesting that Gibran was likely to beat his opponent Bagyo Wahono in the contest.

The quick counts of at least two pollsters project promising early gains for Gibran Rakabuming Raka Bobby Nasution, respectively the President’s eldest son and son-in-law, in yesterday’s 2020 regional elections. The latest polls indicate that Gibran has secured more than 80 percent of the vote in the Surakarta mayoral election in Central Java. The Charta Politika quick count, which has finished counting 100 percent of the samples from polling stations, shows that Gibran and his running mate Teguh Prakosa are leading with 87.15 percent of the vote, while rival pair Bagyo Wahyono and Supardjo FX is tailing with just 12.85 percent. A separate quick count by the Voxpol Center also shows that the polls are favoring Gibran-Teguh with 86.65 percent of the vote, and just 13.34 percent for just Bagyo-Supardjo.
