All politics is local. So it is not the ideological economic situation. It is difficult to make sure governments advice. Because they can be a politically very, very painful process. And no wonder in india it took election and very powerful, very determined Prime Minister to make progress recently. In nigeria is a bit political. So i dont think, i dont think theres a very clear understanding, a very clear consensus on it. Im not aware of one single government which will save no, no, no. We definitely think is a good idea. It is just that the Prime Ministers and finance ministers are looking for the political tactics to do that. And again if you post that come in this country talk about a very substantial proportion of the economically average person to you should not be surprised it is a couple good process but i do think they have made progress. I think i wouldnt characterize it as a failing. If i could you share an anecdote empty chair at the National Press club theres a meeting with
Viable in the philippines. Again, human behavior. Its taken them ten years to pass the Renewable Energy act. Its taken them another five years. Human behavior effects this. And i think theres a lot of opportunities where asia can do better. Biofuels, and i call this more efficient use of coal. When i was in charge of the clean energy program, i got hammered i used to get hammered all the time by grease peace, because it was called the asian dams and bridges bank and we finance a lot of coal, they say its changed. But they use to hammer us all the time and say, no, you cant use clean coal because youre whitewashing the problem. Theres no such thing as clean coal. Coal is dirty. And so we in the peace treaty we decided that whenever we talk about clean coal, supposed to call it more efficient use of coal. When i say more efficient use of coal, i mean ccs. And we have some funding from the ccs institute. And weve been working in india, china, vietnam and chio on the for ccs. And weve been
Utility partners in building more gas but still worried about those price shocks and they see keeping coal in the mix is one of the ways that they can avoid those kinds of shocks as part of what they do. Last thing i will say, of course, is thats the United States story. In other countries, coal is much more prevalent and the availability of gas much more limited. So, from a global perspective, we certainly see coal as an important player, not just in the United States or not just in north america but many parts of the world. Hi, Charles Ebinger from brookings. Julio, it seems to an outsider that the administration a bit schizophrenic on ccs and coal, in general, because the one hand, we have the excellent would, that you have highlighted the doe is doing, the other hand, we look at the organizations like opec, xn bank, so forth, as well as our positions in financial institutions, we seem to take a very negative attitude toward financing coal in other localities. Could you make a comme
Everybody. Things likes showcase projects for example in this country or in others. Also International Partnerships can accelerate the learning, sharing. Can accelerate deployment. We dont have to build five kinds of plants in five Different Countries if we can just build one plant in one country and share the results, it saves money and saves time in a very useful way. The International Landscape is also changing dramatically. Im sure many of you here watched the u. S. china accord that was announced in november. We were all very, very pleased with this. It includes, among other things, a large ccs project in china and a science project that is a joint International Project shared by the United States, china, and other nations. Were thrilled with this outcome. Theres also a new kind of project that the chinese are going to pilot, an enhanced Water Recovery project. Like enhanced oil recovery except pulling out oil you pull out brines and you use the pressure youre using in injection t
Of conspiring to kill u. S. After the 9 11 attacks. Thanks for joining us. A moment of history in the vatican this morning. President obama is meeting pope francis a year after he took office. They shook hands around a half hour ago. They are expected to find Common Ground when it comes to the facts against global policy. Alan johnston was watching live with me when it happened. We both remarked on the openness of the body language. They seemed to have a very friendly demeanor as they met. They did, indeed. We saw president obama get delivered by his motorcade into their cobbled courtyard in the heart of the papal pass lass and processed through the magnificent marble corridors in the papal palace, meeting pope francis in a room outside the papal library. Then the two went into the small throne room where they were to conduct their meeting. Youre right, the atmosphere seemed as good as it could be. Mr. Obama, relaxed and easy. The two of them chatted. We know how that president obama s
