Charles Leclerc has a Ferrari deal that runs until the end of the 2024 season but already the driver is speaking about extending it.
Leclerc joined Ferrari in 2019, signing for the Italian stable ahead of its engine controversy.
That season Ferrari were accused by their rivals of running an illegal engine, resulting in the FIA issuing several Technical Directives aimed at preventing abuse of the fuel-flow rules.
Ferrari’s pace immediately tailed off with neither Leclerc nor Sebastian Vettel adding to the team’s three wins in the wake of the TDs. ....

Haas team boss Guenther Steiner believes the new Ferrari engine is a “medium step” forward, but does not have all the data.
Ever since the new Technical Directives were issues over the power units, Ferrari have been struggling for horsepower. In 2020 the Scuderia, along with customer teams Haas and Alfa Romeo, were regularly down fonr straight-line speed.
But, Ferrari come into the new campaign with an improved power unit which they believe has recouped a large chunk of that power, and having tested it for the first time in Bahrain, Steiner described it as a “medium step” forward. ....

Charles Leclerc has kept a firm lid on expectations at Ferrari ahead of the 2021 season, saying they won’t reach the same level as they did in 2019.
The 2019 campaign saw the Scuderia keep Mercedes on their toes throughout the season, but did so with a engine that they were forced to change for 2020 after the FIA’s investigation into their power unit resulted in the issuing of new Technical Directives to follow.
Although not the sole reason for Ferrari’s demise, a weakened power unit in 2020 led to the Scuderia’s worst finish in the Constructors’ Championship in 40 years. ....
