Education minister orders review of Chilliwack school board amid human rights concerns

VANCOUVER
B.C.’s new minister of education is ordering a review of the Chilliwack school board to make sure its trustees are respecting the human rights of students in the district.
Jennifer Whiteside announced Tuesday she’s ordered the review to evaluate the board’s “commitment to a school system that is safe, inclusive and welcoming to all students and staff.”
The well-being of students and staff in our education system is my highest priority and must be the highest priority of school trustees as well, Whiteside said in a news release.
Those tasked with the review will investigate “the extent that actions of trustees in their role are consistent with the human rights of students and staff.” ....

Richmond mom's Facebook page tracks COVID exposures in B.C. schools

With a household at high risk medically, Marliss wanted to be in the know about the COVID-19 situation in schools. She first connected with a dad in Quebec who had created a website tracking school exposures. That inspired her to create one for BC schools, always wanting to ensure the information she shares is “fact-based, and validated” backed by letters from public health or school administrators. Along with her counterpart, a Vancouver Island mom, Marliss estimates managing the page takes about 11 hours per day. It now has over 39,000 followers and continues to grow.
“The messages start pouring in first thing in the morning, and continue throughout the day,” Marliss says. “We do respond to each and every person’s email, whether it’s just a thumbs-up to let them know we saw it.”  ....
