Minke whale anchored off Farewell Spit after stranding

In the following days, DOC received several more reports of a whale swimming close to shore from people in Parapara, Milnthorpe and Collingwood.
On Wednesday morning, Ogle got a call to say a whale had stranded at Ferry Point, near the Aorere River mouth.
“When we got there it was clearly dead and had been that way for quite a few hours, so it probably died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.”

The baleen whale was found dead on the beach but appeared to be in good condition.
Ogle said DOC was unsure of the cause of death, which could often be challenging to determine. ....

Improvised roadblock prevents freedom campers accessing reserve

“Someone with heavy machinery” took protecting Taupata Gravel Reserve from freedom campers into their own hands over the summer period. The TDC will try to find those responsible to have them remove the blockage.
Birdwatchers were taken aback to discover Taupata Reserve blocked off by a mound of dirt, presumably to stop freedom campers using the gravel reserve.
Taupata Gravel Reserve in the Tasman District was removed from advertising as a freedom camping area in December, but the hearing panel making the decision noted that as a roading reserve it was not possible to ban self-contained vehicles from the area entirely. ....
