so wherever you look in the world now, turkey is what president erdogan calls the turkish century is how he s going to view it. from the united states point of view, the number one issue is going to be nato and is turkey going to drop its opposition to sweden joining nato over ukraine? president erdogan has been forceful against president biden in this regard and now the two leaders will have to find some sort of way forward, some sort of negotiation, if you can. but here you have president erdogan with a third term, powerful in terms of geo politics, an economy that s in trouble but certainly giving no quarter. richard quest, thank you so much in turkey. all right, hello again,
years brings, but i think he wants to improve relations with washington. the russians sold him a very sophisticated air defense system, which caused the biden administration, they can afford to suspend turkey s participation in the f-35 program, though i think he does want to mend relations with washington. what price he s going to have to pay to do that is unclear. but turkey is a player and erdogan, as i mentioned, as proven remarkably adepts , even though this election did challenge him, they maintain their character and relevance in the region and maintain his personal rule. aaron david miller, great to see you this weekend. thank you so much.
explanation is destiny. turkey straddles east and west on one hand. it s a member of nato, even while erdogan must for economic and political reasons maintain very close ties to vladimir putin. so, yeah, i think he has a very problematic relationship with the united states, even though he s a member of nato, and other than ukraine probably the most powerful military in the alliance. so, yeah, he s traded on his foreign policy expertise in his capacity to play any number of different angles. they good relationship these days with the israelis as a way to endear himself to the americans. so he s cagey and he s good at keeping a secret. so good relationship with israelis, but not such a great relationship with the biden administration. now what? well, that s a very good question. we ll see what the next five
