Earning a college degree is an impressive feat for any student in higher education. But for one 78-year-old graduate, finally earning her bachelor s degree after several decades of putting off her schooling has been all the more special.
Vivian Cunningham, 78, was among the 553 students graduating in the Class of 2021 at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday. According to a statement from the university, she spent a total of six years earning her bachelor s degree in Liberal Studies.
There were some times I wanted to give up, she said in a statement to Samford University News. Despite the challenges over the better part of a decade when she thought to herself, I m not going back I m just tired, she just [kept] on going. ....

Vivian Cunningham s lifelong passion for learning led her to a moment she won t forget over the weekend when the 78-year-old great-grandmother was handed her college diploma from Samford University.
If I could have done cartwheels across the stage, I would have, Cunningham told TODAY.

The retired Alabama Power Company worker, mother of two, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of three spent six years working toward her degree in liberal studies at the university in Birmingham, Alabama.
I say follow your dreams, don t let anyone tell you it can t be done, keep pushing and keep God in the plan, she said. ....

MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND. THIS IS GOING TO BE FOR VIVIAN COVINGTON CUNNINGHAM HER DAUGHTER JUST FLEW INTO TOWN. SO SHE’LL BE SURROUNDED BY FAMILY ON SUNDAY, BUT FIRST ANOTHER CELEBRATION AS WVTM 13’S, JEFF ELIASOPH TELLS US VIVIAN CUNNINGHAM IS ABOUT TO RECEIVE HER COLLEGE DIPLOMA AT THE AGE OF 78. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER TAKING A PROUD STROLL ON THE CAMPUS OF SAMFORD UNIVERSITY LOOK AT A KID WITH TASSELED CAP ON HEAD AND A FULL HEART VIVIAN CUNNINGHAM WILL GRADUATE ON SATURDAY AS A MEMBER OF THE CLASS OF 2021. IT WAS A LONG HARD STRIP. BUT I MANAGED TO KEEP GOING MARRIED AT 18 THEN TWO CHILDREN. SHE WORKED AS A SEAMSTRESS THEN 13 YEARS FOR ALABAMA POWER AS A CUSTODIAN WORKING THE NIGHT. SHE IF I TO SLEEP DURING THE DAY. SO I COULDN’T KNOW. I COULDN’T ATTEND SCHOOL AT THAT TIME WHEN SHE STARTED WORKING IN THE MAILROOM CUNNINGHAM BEGAN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE COMPANY’S TUITION REIMBURSE ....
