Nearly two years ago, Cuyahoga County declared racism a public health crisis as the Black Lives Matter movement was sweeping the country. Since then, county officials have taken some initial steps to address racial and health inequities that have plagued the area for centuries. But some say change has not come quickly enough.
Tariq K. Shabazz has run twice for Congress. Now, he’s competing in the Democratic primary for Cuyahoga County executive. Shabazz is running on a platform of criminal justice reform, cybersecurity and aid to those in economic need.
Smith is the only woman in the race to lead Cuyahoga County government. Also seeking the office are Chris Ronayne and Tariq K. Shabazz, both Democrats, and Republican Lee Weingart.
