ELKINS Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center residents had a merrier Christmas thanks to a donation by an Upshur County Christian men’s group.
For the past five years, the organization made up of men from various churches throughout Upshur County raised funds to help needy children. But with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and morale running low in long-term care facilities throughout the state, the group decided to change it up this Christmas season and donate funds to nursing facilities to help brighten their holiday. ....

There’s jobs to be had: The House Appropriations and Finance Committee held its initial meeting online Thursday, with lawmakers reviewing budget proposals of both Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the Legislative Finance Committee.
One big difference in the two budgets which are about $600 million apart is the LFC’s  inclusion of $60 million for state, public school and higher education employees average raises of 1.5 percent, as well as $3 million for pay increases for essential health and social service front-line employees. The governor’s budget has no across-the-board raises.
David Abbey, director of the Legislative Finance Committee, told lawmakers the money could help in recruiting and retaining state employees. The state has an 18 percent vacancy rate. In terms of keeping up on salary increases, Abbey told the committee, “We’ve fallen behind”. ....

ELKINS Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center held a socially-distanced employee recognition reception where employees were honored for their service to the organization.
Those recognized during the celebration included Johnny Bodkin who has worked at ERCC for over half a century, starting in 1969.
“Johnny has been a great employee and a true friend to our residents for 51 years,” said Tara Shaver, administrator. “He takes our philosophy of treating every resident like a family member very seriously.”
“We’re very proud of his service and the work of all of our employees,” she added. ....

ELKINS Nursing homes in Randolph County are receiving doses of COVID-19 vaccine, and one facility began administering vaccinations Thursday.
The vaccine arrived at Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center at 7 a.m. Thursday, as part of Gov. Jim Justice’s vaccine distribution plan.
A total of 75 ERCC residents and 40 staff members were vaccinated Thursday, officials said.
Four pharmacists and a pharmacy technician from Mace’s Pharmacy in Philippi delivered the vaccine supply to ERCC and prepared it for administration, officials said. ERCC nursing administrative staff administered the vaccinations to residents and staff members. ....
