Newland, a citizen of the Bay Mills Indian Community, goes before the
Senate Committee on Indian Affairs for his nomination hearing on Wednesday afternoon. He
prepared an opening statement as part of the confirmation process, highlighting his goals and priorities should he be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
“If confirmed, I will bring that perspective with me to the Department of the Interior. We must help Indian Country build back better after the pandemic,” Newland says in his written testimony. “We must also respond with urgency to the violence against Indigenous women and children. And we must lay the foundation for the next generation of Native children to succeed.”

Last week, I was finally able to attend a meet-and-greet with artists dg smalling and Nicole Moan for their striking joint exhibit of his paintings and her mixed-media corsets at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. The exhibit ends Thursday, but if you have a chance before then, drop by and see their colorful works exploring contemporary female warriors.
Called “The Visage of Modern Matriarchy,” the exhibit started with smalling’s stylized female Native American warriors painted with acrylic on birch panels. Moan’s corsets complement the paintings and offer commentary, such as her corset the “Trail of Broken Treaties,” which includes cloth depicting the words of actual treaties. Smalling’s paintings are “inspired by Eastern tribal hieroglyphs and Moan’s corsets “manifest this spiritual regalia,�
