On the Town: See works honoring contemporary female warriors

Last week, I was finally able to attend a meet-and-greet with artists dg smalling and Nicole Moan for their striking joint exhibit of his paintings and her mixed-media corsets at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. The exhibit ends Thursday, but if you have a chance before then, drop by and see their colorful works exploring contemporary female warriors.
Called “The Visage of Modern Matriarchy,” the exhibit started with smalling’s stylized female Native American warriors painted with acrylic on birch panels. Moan’s corsets complement the paintings and offer commentary, such as her corset the “Trail of Broken Treaties,” which includes cloth depicting the words of actual treaties. Smalling’s paintings are “inspired by Eastern tribal hieroglyphs and Moan’s corsets “manifest this spiritual regalia,” the exhibit’s description states.
