Ministry defends selection of HSR station in Yilan

Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材) yesterday defended the choice of a new location for a proposed high-speed rail (HSR) station in Yilan County, saying that it was supported by residents and the ministry followed proper procedures in planning the project.
Wang on Sunday confirmed that a site 350m south of Yilan County Hall was found to be the optimal location to build the station from among five sites that ministry officials proposed.

Taoyuan Metro to hold disaster drills at two stations

Taoyuan Metro Corp is on Saturday next week to hold disaster response drills for its staff at the Sanchong and New Taipei Industrial Park stations, it said yesterday.
The company said it has always emphasized safety since the Taoyuan International Airport MRT Line began service in 2017 and has conducted nine drills in cooperation with the Taoyuan City Police Department’s Metro Police Division.
The drills have focused on scenarios involving disaster response, criminal attacks, hostage rescue and explosives, the company added.
The company said it also conducts routine monthly drills for its staff regarding the handling of dangerous items or incidents.

Japanese contractor for airport MRT to be fined

More than NT$700 million (US$25.06 million) is to be deducted from a payment to Marubeni Corp, after the Japanese firm failed to meet several criteria set in the contract for the electromechanical system of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line, the Railway Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau is verifying the work before giving final approval of the airport MRT line, which was launched in March 2017.
However, the contractor has not been able to meet three key criteria set in the contract: average operating speed, estimated travel time and train intervals, the bureau said.

COVID-19: MRT firms predict massive losses

The operators of the country’s four largest MRT metro rail systems have predicted combined losses of up to NT$10.156 billion (US$364.54 million) due to low ridership after the nationwide COVID-19 alert was raised to level 3 on May 19.
For the year, Taipei Rapid Transit Corp estimated losses of NT$5 billion to NT$8 billion, Taoyuan Metro Corp forecast NT$900 million in losses for its line from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Taipei, Taichung Mass Rapid Transit System Co predicted losses of NT$656 million and Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp estimated NT$600 million in losses, the companies said on Saturday.
