UK MPs call on UAE to release 14 detainees including British nati


British politicians have signed a petition calling on the UK government to put pressure on the United Arab Emirates to release 14 individuals who have been detained in Emirati prisons after serving their full sentences.
MPs Layla Moran, Liberal Democrat and Desmond Swayne, Conservative, are some of the eight Members of Parliament who signed the petition, launched by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.
One of the individuals currently in a UAE prison is 54-year-old British national Michael Bryan Smith, despite completing the end of his prison term.
Human rights activists say they are being held without any legal basis - meaning they are being kept in arbitrary detention. ....

EU's border force accused of breaking human rights laws on migrant boat actions


Dr Tanya Newbury-Smith, a British trustee of the group, said: “This report clearly articulates ongoing violations of the European law by Frontex. The practice of pushbacks, called ‘Greek water polo’ in the Aegean, is not only illegal under human rights and international maritime laws but endangers the lives of vulnerable men, women, and children who continue to cross in over-crowded and unsuitable boats or dinghies.
“It is only compounded by reports that before being pushed back into non-EU waters, some of the vessels have been intentionally disabled by removal of their engines or fuel. I would urge the UK Government to not turn a blind eye to these abuses, in adherence to its mandate to international maritime and UN Conventions.” ....
