HARTFORD, CT State Sen. Derek Slap (D – West Hartford) and State Rep. Kate Farrar (D – West Hartford) Tuesday joined the Connecticut Immigrant & Refugee Coalition, United Action Connecticut, HUSKY 4 Immigrants, the Charter Oak Cultural Center, and advocates in front of the Legislative Office Building to rally support for a legislative proposal that expands health insurance coverage to certain undocumented immigrants.
The bill, S.B. 956, provides Medicaid for pregnant women and HUSKY B for children who meet certain income eligibility guidelines. The legislature s Human Services Committee voted to advance the bill on Thursday, April 1. Connecticut just became the latest US state to advance The CROWN Act, prohibiting natural hair discrimination in schools and workplaces. The Senate reached a unanimous decision on Monday, and the bill will now go to Governor Ned Lamont’s desk, where it is expected to be signed into law.
Gov. Lamont reacted to the news on Twitter, writing, “This measure is critical to helping build a more equitable society, and I look forward to signing it into law in the coming days.” Representative Tammy Exum was one of many who championed the bill, stressing in an interview with NBC Connecticut that Black women face more scrutiny based on their hair. “Unfortunately, when you have hair that isn’t straight and when you have skin that’s Black or brown, it isn’t simply hair. Natural Hair,” seeks to promote safe environments for Black people who wear their hair naturally and in traditionally Black hairstyles including afros, dreadlocks, cornrows, and braids. “I look at the hair of those around me and just accept it as is. It doesn’t speak to their ability, their competency, their performance or their knowledge. It is simply their hair,” Exum said. 
Rep. Patricia Billie Miller said she’s sad that they have to put into a law that a person shouldn’t be discriminated against because of their hair.
“When I graduated from college I realized that I had to straighten my hair because I looked too ethnic if I didn’t straighten my hair and I realized that I would not get hired,” Miller said. ....
