With recent moves of exotic animals into the municipality, Hastings Highlands has begun the process to regulate them.
In the last council meeting, staff was directed to create an exotic animal bylaw that will be presented to council at a later date. The municipality appears to have sought a legal opinion during a closed-door session, with the motion being voted on in an open session. The decision was passed unanimously.
Exotic animals have been a hot-button topic since last November, when Mark and Tammy Drysdale brought their animals, mainly large cats, to Hastings Highlands from Lambton Shores after a dispute with that municipality. The Drysdales maintain that their animals are domesticated and what they do is legal. Hastings County completes Exotic Animal Bylaw template | Bancroft this Week

Responding to a request from Hastings Highlands council to assist in the creation of an Exotic Animal Bylaw, Hastings County’s Planning and Development committee recently approved the template which could be used by its member municipalities to help regulate the keeping of exotic animals.
The county’s director of planning and development, Justin Harrow described the template in his report to the committee on Feb. 16 as “a good start” for member municipalities that do not have a bylaw. He also indicated that it can be a useful tool for other municipalities interested in updating legislation they may already have in place to regulate the keeping of exotic animals. After acknowledging in the report how Ontario is the only province in Canada that does not have legislation regulating exotic animals, Harrow recommended that county council approve the template bylaw, and share it with all its member munici ....

Big cat owners release recording of conversation with Mayor Bodnar

Late Sunday evening, big cat owners Mark and Tammy Drysdale released a video recording of a conversation they had with Hastings Highlands Mayor Vic Bodnar regarding their plans to open a roadside zoo/safari experience in the municipality.
In the recording, Mark Drysdale can be heard explaining their predicament and expressing his interest in bringing their business to Hastings Highlands. Although it is unclear exactly when the conversation took place, it becomes obvious that it occurred prior to the Drysdales purchasing their property on Peterson Road when Mark indicates they are looking for land, and Mayor Bodnar advises him regarding specific local properties that were on the market at the time. ....

Highlands East council looking into exotic animal by-law

At their next meeting, Highlands East council will discuss an animal control by-law.
The township’s Bylaw Enforcement Officer Kristen Boylan put forward the recommendation at the January 19th meeting.
She says this is a precautionary measure after two people moved to neighbouring Hastings Highlands and opened an exotic animal zoo.
Boylan noted that Ontario is the only province in Canada with exotic animal legislation. “At this time there is no Provincial Legislation or regulations in place to prevent a citizen from keeping an exotic animal in Ontario unless under Municipal By-law. Each Municipality must enact a by-law to define the exotic animal species and either prohibit, regulate, licence and/or all of the above within their by-law,” she added. ....
