(Meredith Bruckner) ANN ARBOR – A group of University of Michigan parents and students gathered outside the Michigan Union on Saturday afternoon calling for the school to offer an in-person graduation. “We very much wish that we could hold a safe Commencement in Michigan Stadium, along with the many other celebration activities that are a fundamental part of our community life and traditions,” U-M President Mark Schlissel wrote in a letter to the campus community at the time. “We still do not know what public health measures will need to be in place in May to hold events like commencement.” ....
University of Michigan nursing student Reagan Cloutier, 21, described her senior year as a bittersweet experience” as she rallied with other parents and students on the Ann Arbor campus Saturday, hoping to get the administration to reconsider its plan for a virtual-only spring commencement. About 20 people outside the Michigan Union on State Street, held up signs and chanted phrases like Big House, big day, in-person graduation all the way, to express their frustration over what they called the university s inability to provide a safe and socially distant in-person graduation ceremony for the class of 2021. When announcing its decision Feb. 4, U-M s Office of the President said students who missed out on an in-person ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic are invited to participate in future commencement ceremonies of their choosing.
