School districts are only under the authority and oversight of the state Department of Education, Caraker said. Dr. Rebekah Bernard, the president of the board of directors for the Collier County Medical Society, said the group recommends people continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for mask use and social distancing. School Board member Stephanie Lucarelli said she wants to ensure that there will not be a return to masks next school year. I m glad we ll be looking at this in a couple of weeks at a June board meeting, Lucarelli said. So that families know that is the intention going forward in the next school year. Board member Jen Mitchell also said she does not support the mask mandate going into next year. Mitchell said she s thrilled that there will be a discussion and possible vote at the next school board meeting on making masks optional for summer. Collier and Lee county school districts joined the efforts to offer eligible employees COVID-19 vaccines. The Collier County School District through its partnership with the Department of Health-Collier and Collier County Emergency Medical Services last week provided initial doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna. The vaccines were reserved for Collier employees who are 65 years or older as stated under Gov. Ron DeSantis executive order. More than 240 people registered for last week s vaccinations spread across two days, according to the district. The vaccinations are free and optional, according to the district. On Monday, Lee County Superintendent Greg Adkins said 240 appointments were made by district employees who met the requirements. Those eligible are employees who are 65 and up, as well as school nurses. ....
