Today, Thursday, May 6, marks the 14 month anniversary since Austin officials first declared a local state of disaster for the
COVID-19 crisis. For many, these last 426 days have taken much – lives, jobs, businesses, security, mental health – and the pandemic is still a part of our lives (and most likely will be for some time). Although the future isn t entirely in focus yet, this month s queer happenings have got me feeling hopeful not only about the here and now but also what lies on the horizon. Back in early March 2020, which feels like 100 years ago, the thriving Austin music industry felt the rumblings of a catastrophic event: the cancellation of South by Southwest (SXSW). It would be the first time in the 34-year history of the annual conference once solely dedicated to music and now expanded to education, film, and interactive that venues across the city would go dark. Faced with the implications of creating a superspreader event, as hundreds of thousands of people from dozens of countries prepared to crowd together and sway and sweat as guitars rang out around them, the City of Austin did the unthinkable and pulled the plug. It was a bellwether for the immense economic impact on the global music industry, as live music basically ceased to exist. ....
